Is Losing Weight Good For Brain
Obesity works on a number of different metabolic pathways that can affect the way your brain operates. A growing body of evidence has suggested that obesity is linked to cognitive deficits and that weight loss leads to improved brain function. More so, obesity is a known risk factor for
A study performed by UCLA discovered that obese individuals have 8% less brain tissue than people of normal weight. Additionally, individuals that are overweight have 4% less brain tissue. This represents severe brain degeneration, according to a professor of neurology at UCLA. Consequently, it puts obese individuals at a much greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s and other diseases that attack the brain.

According to a study from the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, losing weight will improve your health in many ways. One of these benefits is improved brain function. Their findings suggest that some of the obesity-associated impairments of the brain can be reversed with weight loss, leading to improved:

A proper diet is also essential not only for losing weight, but also to sharpen your brain. You may not think it, but the foods that you consume have the ability to affect your brain’s function.
If you are eating the healthy foods that help aid in weight loss, then your diet is suitable for good brain power. You should eat foods that make up a well-balanced diet such as:
More so, after weight loss surgery, you should take the proper amounts of vitamins. This is because without adequate amounts of certain vitamins, minerals and other substances in your body, your brain will literally not have the tools that it needs to work as it should.
Outsmart Your Brain To Lose Weight
When you exercise, you improve your brain’s ability to focus. This is because when you work out, your brain secretes opiates. Opiates control vital roles such as:
There is increasing evidence indicating the improvement of mental well-being from exercising. Researchers from the Canadian Institute of Health maintain that exercise or working out is a natural remedy that helps improve cognitive abilities as well as physical performance.
Excess weight on the body affects not only your heart, lungs, bones, and joints, but your brain as well. There is nothing more important than having a healthy brain working at its best. The brain operates at its most optimal level when individuals are at a healthy normal weight. Therefore, if an individual is overweight or obese weight loss can help improve cognitive function (memory, attention, coordination) as well as exercise, a proper diet with healthy food choices, and an adequate intake of vitamins.

For many of us, one of the most convincing arguments for keeping body fat percentages low is risk of disease. Sure, there are other reasons to lose weight as well. But have you ever considered how your weight affects your mental capacity? There is significant research that argues excess levels of fat tissue in the body (also known as adiposity) create higher risk of heart disease. But recent research suggests that maybe risk of chronic diseases shouldn’t be the only reason you should maintain a healthy body fat percentage. A study recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association focused on how excessive fatty tissue in the body can also affect one’s cognitive function.

Investigators studied over 9, 000 adults, ages 30-75 who had no heart disease. These participants were given the Digital Symbol Substitution Test to assess their cognitive function. After the participant pool was also adjusted for cardiovascular risk factors, educational level, and vascular brain injury, investigators still found that excess body fat lowered cognitive performance. In other words, when all other variables were removed, those who had healthy levels of body fat experienced better cognitive performance. Participants were not less educated, and they had healthy brain activity.
In fact, depending on the body fat ratio, participants who had excess body fat experienced cognitive aging of between 1-3 years. For those who may be genetically predisposed to Alzheimer’s or dementia, this study adds another helpful goal for staying sharp as one ages.

So, why are we telling you to train your brain to lose weight? Because weight loss is more of a mind over body game than a diet and exercise plan. “We have to understand that the way our brain processes feelings and emotions impacts our body. Many times uncontrolled emotions can manifest in many unpleasant ways in the body – aches and pains, weight gain, increase in blood sugar levels are a few to name. This is why it becomes necessary to train your brain in a proper manner to lose weight, ” says Neha Verma, Head – Department of Psychology and Wellbeing (Clinical Psychologist), Fittterfly Healthtech Pvt Ltd.
Sometimes, people cannot lose weight despite following a proper diet and exercise plan. “Most of the time, people know what they have to do to lose weight but find it difficult to implement it or make necessary changes in their lives. If despite following a proper diet and exercise one is unable to lose weight, there could be a deep psychological reason for the same, ” says Dr Verma.
According to Neha Verma, 4 prime reasons why people fail to lose weight despite diet and exercise are – 1. Not prioritising their health:

Weight Loss By Intermittent Fasting Can Alter Your Brain Activity
Sometimes, goals like shedding 10 kilos in 20 days or something that hardly gets done become a demotivating factor for many, and people give up easily.
Often, people don’t have a clear outcome goal – losing weight for better blood sugar readings, running a marathon, for better heart health – this makes them deviate from their healthy habits easily. Having a goal and a reason behind it always helps.
“It is very important to practice mindful eating while trying to lose weight. Being conscious about what you eat helps to establish a connection between the brain and stomach. Mindful eating activates the hypothalamus of the brain which gives cues to the body to stop eating when full. This doesn’t happen when you binge eat or watch TV while having dinner, ” says Neha.
