Losing Weight With Smoothies And Soup

Losing Weight With Smoothies And Soup

A Soup/Smoothie Cleanse is a great option for those who are new to cleansing and want to start gentle, as it allows you to give your body and digestive system a rest while still consuming blended drinks and soups. This cleanse is all about blended foods that are easy for your body to process and fully absorb all the nutrients it needs. You can combine the two and have both smoothies and soup, or you can stick to just one or the other. An all-soup cleanse is best to be done in the winter, as it is warming and grounding for your body when it’s cold. All-smoothie cleanses are great for summer months when you want to refresh and cool down. Below is a helpful breakdown of each, along with some great recipe options that we love and recommend!

*For further guidance, we have an example schedule of what your soup cleanse could look like in our 3 Example Cleanse Schedules post!

Before doing any cleanse, it is important that you ease yourself in and out of it properly to receive the full benefits! Click below and make sure you’ve read our Pre and Post Cleanse Guidelines.

The Top 9 Smoothie And Soup Boosters To Get The Most Nutrition

A soup cleanse is a really comforting and nourishing option. It consists of consuming your choice of a nutritious, plant-based* soup when hunger arises along with water or decaffeinated herbal teas (if you like) for a set period of time. The duration of your cleanse will vary depending on what your health goals are for the practice. It’s important that when doing a soup cleanse, you take in soups with wholesome, nutrient-dense ingredients that will nourish your body. You can choose to purchase pre-made, organic soups or make your own (our favorite recipes below), just make sure that they are blended and plant-based! This will allow for the easiest digestion, which is key when cleansing. TIP: It’s always easiest to prepare your soup in a large batch the day before your cleanse and store it in the fridge to last you for the duration of your cleanse. This will allow for a more easeful practice that doesn’t involve having to cook.

Another great thing that we love about soup cleansing is that you can make it seasonal, adapting to the ingredients that are growing around you at any given time and making them shine! Such a lovely way to cleanse and connect with the food rhythms of our planet.

4.Turn off heat. Blend the soup with an immersion hand blender. Season with salt and pepper. Mix in the hemp seeds and blend. Add more liquids if it's too thick.

A smoothie cleanse is essentially the same protocol as a soup cleanse except, obviously, with smoothies! This is a great option during the summer months when you want to detoxify your system while cooling your body and staying energized. This cleanse involves consuming a nutritious smoothie when you feel hungry, along with lots of water and decaffeinated herbal teas (if you like). We highly recommend drinking green smoothies, as they are more detoxifying and have added nutrients from the kale, spinach, or herbs that you are using. NOTE: Make sure to steer clear of protein powders during a cleanse as you don’t know what’s in them - if you are going to add powders to your smoothie, go for single ingredients so you can be sure of what you’re adding in and know that you are sourcing the best ingredients. TIP: Prepping your smoothies ahead of time can make the cleanse easier if you’re on the go. This also helps you to stay on the cleanse if you feel hunger arise quickly. The key is making it easy for yourself!

When building a cleansing smoothie, here are the basics that you should include to ensure that it’s nutritious and balanced. We recommend balancing healthy sugars with healthy fats to avoid blood-sugar spikes. Adding greens and veg to your smoothies will ensure that you receive vital nutrients and help you stay fuller for longer.

HOW

These cleanse styles are simply for you to explore if you feel comfortable and safe to do so. We do not recommend any specific diet and our main focus is encouraging you to know your body and begin to deeply listen to what it needs. These cleanses/fasts are always subjective to you and your health needs. We always suggest protocols that have been shown to improve the quality of life in people. However, we always recommend that you contact a health professional to see what works best for you and your circumstances if you have any pre-existing health conditions. Do not attempt any cleanse if you are menstruating, pregnant or breastfeeding, or are currently extremely weak or debilitated. If you do choose to do a cleanse/fast, it’s important to know that the experience may be accompanied by the physical and emotional discomfort that comes with the body’s detoxification process. Know that slight discomfort is totally normal, and you are encouraged to journal what you feel, be compassionate with yourself, and investigate it in those moments, making sure to drink lots of water. If the discomfort becomes too intense, be honest and intuitive with yourself and do not push yourself past your edge. There is no failure in this process. Even if you fast/cleanse for 8 hours, you will have learned something about yourself, and that is the goal here.I’ve always been into health and fitness. In high school, I worked in fitness centers and was really into eating healthy. Now, I'm a registered dietician, so my love for soups and smoothies naturally evolved from my knowledge and personal health habits. I’d go to smoothie shops if I was out, and for dinner I’d just have leftover veggies on hand at home so I’d make soups with them. I love them so much I worked with

Soups and smoothies are a quick and easy way to get your fruit and veggie fix—and most people are not getting enough of either. In one smoothie, you can get two servings of fruit and three of veggies without feeling like you’re eating spinach. The protein, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals help boost the your energy and your moods without feeling weighed down or sleepy like you do after eating a big bowl of pasta. They’re ideal if you’re busy or stressed and don’t feel like cooking a meal and sitting down to eat it.

I probably have a smoothie five to six times a week now, usually as a lunchtime meal replacement or breakfast on busy days. It’s cold and refreshing and helps get my blood sugar up when I’m not super hungry. I love a peanut-butter banana protein smoothie with almond milk, or, if I’m not in the mood for that, one with berries and yogurt. I’ll bring it in the car and sip on it as I’m running errands.

Recipe

Veggies are sometimes a challenge because they can go bad in the fridge before you get around to cooking them. That’s where soups come in especially handy: I usually make one big batch once a month and freeze it. I like blending in cannellini beans, which gives soups a creamy flavor without adding heavy cream, along with lots of veggies like potatoes, carrots, and spinach. I’ll pull it out two nights a week, more often during the winter, to eat before dinner instead of salad. They’re great because they fill you up and satisfy you so don’t overdo it on the rest of your meal.

To keep your smoothies healthy, I recommend adding one cup of frozen or fresh fruit max and balancing with veggies and a source of protein (like a powder, peanut butter, or yogurt) to make it a complete meal. With soups, skip those that are heavy on the cheese and cream, because they can get really high in calories. To keep the sodium in check, go for low-sodium veggie and chicken broth, or if you’re buying the canned stuff look for 400 to 500 milligrams sodium max.

These days when I put on a few pounds over the holidays, I fall back on soups and smoothies to reset and get my diet back on track. If I overdo it on the weekend, I feel bloated and I’m not all that hungry on Monday. Having a smoothie is always a great way to reset my diet and manage my weight by keeping my weekly calories balanced. I also find my skin doesn’t break out as much when I'm eating lots of homemade soups and smoothies because they both have lots of liquid, keeping me nourished and hydrated. Making them helped transform my health—I can't imagine life without them!
