Does A Cpap Machine Help You Lose Weight

The connection between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)and weight is well established. In fact, being overweight or obese is considered one of the primary risk factors of sleep apnea. This is because when extra tissue accumulates around the upper airway, it can change the shape of the airway or the weight can make the throat more likely to collapse during sleep.

Therefore, it’s not surprising that studies consistently show that weight lossreduces the severity of sleep apnea. Not only does itreduce the number of apneas that occur, but it also improves the quality of patients’ sleep.

CPAP

Monitored the sleep quality of 72 overweight patients with mild obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The patients changed to a low-calorie diet and received lifestyle counseling, which resulted in a significant decrease in their BMIs. After losing weight, the subjects’ mean number of apnea events per hour (their apnea-hypopnea index, or AHI, learn more about what that means here) decreased significantly.Post weight-loss, the number of patients with sleep apneadecreased by 75%.

Will Losing Weight Stop Snoring Problems?

Obstructive sleep apnea. After losing on average 20+ pounds, the subjects’ AHIs decreased by about 25 events per hour! Plus, their sleep patterns improved, as the patients spent more time in deeper, more restorative sleep stages. However, the patients’ AHI was still around 30 episodes per hour–which meets the criteria for moderate to severe sleep apnea (learn more about understanding sleep study results here).

It’s important to remember that extra weight is not the only cause of sleep apnea. A small jaw, a large neck, large tonsils and adenoids, genetic predisposition, and other factors could be contributing to this sleep disorder. In all likelihood, a case of severe sleep apnea is caused by a combination of these factors–so weight loss alone may notcompletely eliminate the problem. CPAP therapy is the gold-standard therapy for sleep apnea (learn more about CPAP here) and is the only treatment that is 100% effective when used properly every night (learn about alternatives to CPAP here).

While weight loss might not completely cure sleep apnea in every case, it definitely has a beneficial effect. If you have significantly altered your lifestyle or lost weight, it may be time to reevaluate your sleep apnea treatment. You could require a lower PAP pressure to keep your airway open, or you might not need treatment any more at all. Conversely, if you have recently gained weight, you may have higher pressure requirements. Typically, a titration study will be ordered to assess your pressure requirements (learn more about different study types here). You may also benefit from using an autoset CPAP device which adjusts its pressure based on your requirements throughout the night (learn about the difference between CPAP and APAP here).

OSA and obesity are also both known to cause abnormalities in the cardiovascular system and metabolism.¹ Weight loss can help to reduce these complications, as well as the severity of OSA.¹

How Long Will I Have To Use My Cpap Machine?

Because of this evidence, there’s a common belief that you can stop using CPAP if you lose weight. However, Yuanjie Mao, MD, PhD, an endocrinology fellow physician at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, found the opposite: people with obesity and sleep apnea actually need their CPAP to help them lose weight.²

Mao and his team conducted a study over 16 weeks to investigate the effect of CPAP on obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients when used with an intensive weight-loss program. The patients were divided into 3 groups: symptomatic OSA patients who used CPAP, symptomatic OSA patients who didn’t use CPAP, and asymptomatic OSA patients who didn’t use CPAP. They found:

In conclusion, when paired with a dieting program, CPAP plays an important role in helping OSA patients lose weight. Evidence also supports that CPAP can help to manage excess weight by regulating the body’s production of hormones that increase appetite.

Sleep Apnea And Weight Gain

By now you’re wondering – how can I make sure my CPAP is treating sleep apnea and reducing risk for obesity? There are a few ways to ensure your CPAP is giving you the best CPAP therapy possible – and therefore helping you manage your weight as well.

When your supplies are old, the therapy will become less and less effective. Because this happens slowly over time, most folks end up not noticing it. Instead, they will tighten their mask a little more, thinking they just need the seal a little closer.

Eventually this leads to over-tightening that can cause pain, marks, and the annoying “hot mask” feeling. The less comfortable your CPAP supplies are, the harder it is to stay compliant and get your CPAP benefits. You can avoid this by replacing your supplies with fresh ones regularly on the recommended, insurance-backed schedule.

Masks and pumps that keep airways open at night are effective. And the equipment is more comfortable than it used to be.

CPAP masks have become much more comfortable than in years past, doctors say. But most of the time, they're probably not the first thing to try for sleep apnea. iStockphoto.com hide caption

Not so fast, doctors say. Many snorers don't have sleep apnea, which causes a person to frequently stop breathing for brief periods during sleep. It's a big cause of chronic sleepiness and has been linked to a variety of health problems. Sleep apnea can also make a sufferer miserable.

After Sleep Apnoea Diagnosis, Woman Lost 75kg

Poor concentration, daytime sleepiness, high blood pressure, certainly overweight, people who are complaining about a lot of fatigue, all of those ought to make us wonder if a patient has sleep apnea, says Dr. Molly Cooke, president of the American College of Physicians, which issued new guidelines on treatment of sleep apnea Monday. They were published online in

CPAP

The big surprise here is that the doctors didn't find any evidence that sleep apnea boosts a person's risk of death. That's been commonly assumed to be true.

But the guideline committee didn't find any research that measured risk of death, heart disease or stroke in people with sleep apnea. I had gotten it into my head that sleep apnea increased the risk of premature death, Cooke told Shots. That turns out not to be true.

Surgery should be used as a third or fourth option if it's used at all, Cooke says. It can cause short-term problems like excessive bleeding, and long-term problems with swallowing. It's not the get-it-over-with panacea that people sometimes think it is.

For most people, the guidelines say, the first and best treatment is simple and obvious — lose weight. Not everyone with sleep apnea is overweight, but most patients are, Cooke says. Losing weight gets rid of fat that blocks the windpipe.
