Weight Loss May Reduce Cancer Risk, But Beware Of Fad Diets

Globally, cancer is a leading cause of death and the statistics are sobering.  Worldwide cases of cancer are predicted to reach 21.7 million by 2030.

Today on World Cancer Day – and throughout Cancer Prevention Month – one big theme is about getting individuals to play a more active role in reducing their cancer risk. Being active is an important way to do that, and that’s the theme for World Cancer Day.

You surely know that exercise is good for you, but what most Americans don’t know is that being active actually decreases your cancer risk.

Losing Weight After 50 May Reduce Breast Cancer Risk

Our 8th Cancer Awareness Survey, released this week, showed that only 39 percent of Americans know that inactivity relates to cancer risk. And it does.

Research shows that getting at least 30 minutes of moderate activity a day lowers risk for colorectal, breast, and endometrial cancers. Being active also makes a difference for weight management. Staying a healthy weight decreases the risk of 11 cancers, including colorectal, esophageal, and breast.

To help spread this message, World Cancer Day is highlighting their ‘Support through Sport’ initiative, which aims to inspire individuals to get active.

Will Losing Weight Lower Your Cancer Risk? It Can.

World Cancer Day comes at the start of Cancer Prevention Month here in the U.S., a time when and many other health organizations are working to raise awareness of the many steps you and your family can take to reduce cancer risk.

Research shows that being active, eating healthy and staying lean can prevent nearly one third of the most common US cancers.

Add in not smoking, avoiding sun damage and other factors, and that rises to the possibility of preventing nearly half of US cancer cases.

Unexplained Weight Loss: Causes And When To See A Doctor

’s evidence shows that having too much body fat increases risk for eleven cancers. But researchers are looking at whether losing weight, once overweight, would lead to lower risk for these cancers. Now a new study from researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center shows how weight loss – through diet alone or diet and exercise – might change pro-cancer substances in the body.

The 12-month controlled trial of 439 healthy, postmenopausal women with overweight/obesity included 4 randomized groups: calorie restriction diet; moderate activity (goal of 3.75 hours per week), diet and exercise, and no intervention. Researchers wanted to see if these lifestyle changes would affect four substances in the body (biomarkers) that influence formation of blood vessels needed for tumor growth. Fat cell growth also requires a greater blood supply, so these biomarkers are also associated with increasing fat tissue.

The 10 Commandments Of Cancer Prevention

After 12 months, women in the exercise group lost 2.4% of their body weight; diet only reduced by 8.5% and those exercising and dieting lost 10.8% of their weight. And the more they lost, the more their biomarkers were reduced.

Women who exercised and dieted lost more weight. The women in the exercise only group did not have significant change in biomarker levels.

This may mean losing weight can lower cancer risk. Lower levels of these substances in the body may make it more difficult for cancer cells and tumors to grow because they aren’t able to get the nutrients they need from blood.

Study: Younger Women With Breast Cancer Should Lose Weight

While this study suggests that weight loss in people with overweight and obesity may reduce cancer risk, we need more work to understand the role of these biomarkers, say the study’s authors. And although headlines emphasize weight loss through diet as key in this study, ’s evidence shows that getting at least 30 minutes daily of moderate physical activity lowers risk for colorectal, endometrial and breast cancers.
