At the start of 2019, I decided I wanted to improve my relationship with food, try to stop overeating, and lose some weight.

Over the first six months of that year, I lost 35 pounds and maintained my muscle mass, dropping my body fat percentage from 30% to 17%.
Research shows that it is challenging to lose weight and keep it off. One meta-analysis of weight loss studies found that more than half of weight lost was regained within two years, rising to 80% after five years.
I've maintained my fat loss over the past three and a half years and hope to continue to do so as I feel good, strong, healthy, and happy in my body. Here are the lessons I've learned about how to do it.

To lose weight you need to be in a calorie deficit. When I lost weight, I didn't over-restrict or cut out any food groups and I had plenty of days where I wasn't in a calorie deficit.

I eat all the foods I enjoy, like chocolate and cake, in moderation because even though they are less nutritious and thus less satiating than whole foods, I know I can still make progress.

The only change I make when moving out of a weight-loss phase is to eat a little bit more of the same foods.
I still try to eat mindfully, get steps in every day, eat mostly whole foods, work out around five days a week if possible, and eat plenty of protein.
Eating a high-protein diet has played a big part inme losing fat and keeping it off. Dietitians recommend most people aim for 0.9 grams per pound of your bodyweight, which I do.
How To Lose 50lbs In One Year
There are busy periods where I'm travelling or have more parties and I want to relax my diet and indulge a little more, and also can't prioritize training.
But I now know that if my weight goes upit's not a big deal, I can rein things in and shed any extra fat afterwards. This stops me from worrying about changes to my body.
I've also learned just how much thenumber on thescale can fluctuate on a day-to-day basis. I'll often weigh myself the morning after a big meal and be five pounds heavier than the day before.

I've worked out consistently for five years, but when I go through periods of eating in a calorie surplus, I gain weight.While browsing social media Beth Dammarell scrolled past a picture of herself and couldn’t believe what she was seeing. In April 2017, Dammarell, now 48, began researching how to lose weight. While some diets promised big losses, she worried they were fads and the loss wouldn’t stick. So she stuck to a tried-and-true method: writing down what she ate.
But she kept pushing herself. She’d tell herself to walk past two more houses or for a few more minutes. Exercise and smaller portions worked: She lost about 60 pounds — and then hit a plateau.
“I started to add in more exercise, working out a little bit more and (lifting) a little heavier (weights). That helped me lose another 20 pounds, ” she said.

She worried she would not be able to reach her goal weight of 160 pounds so she turned to her local Life Time gym to help. With the help of a trainer, who gave her both eating and exercising plans, she lost another 37 pounds. Her eating habits transformed even more as she focused on clean whole foods, such as lean protein, fruits and vegetables.
While she is about 15 pounds away from reaching her target weight, she set a non-scale goal she’s now focused on achieving.
Dammarell’s life has changed, too. She enjoys going to amusement parks with her children, now that she's able to ride all the rides. And, she’s been horseback riding and finds that she now likes being in crowds and even flying.

“When I travel for work I don’t have to worry about sitting in the middle seat or asking for a seatbelt extender to get it around me, ” she said. “So many things I experience every day I never could before because of the size that I was.”

“I let my weight hold me back for so long I was always afraid to try something new, ” Dammarell said. “I am discovering all these things that I couldn’t do or I was afraid to do.”

When Dammarell first started losing weight, she simply wanted to lose 10 pounds. That seemed doable. Setting reasonable milestones made it easier for her to reach them.

“I set small goals, ” she said. “It was very daunting and overwhelming to think ‘Oh my God, could I really lose 100 pounds all at once?’”
When Dammarell started going to the gym, she was frustrated that her weight loss had stalled. With the help of the staff, she learned she wasn’t eating enough calories to allow her body to lose weight. After chatting with her trainer, she started losing again.

“It is never too late and you are never too old. If you want to change definitely take the first step, ” Dammarell said.

Admittedly, losing such a large amount of weight is far from easy. It takes a huge amount of effort, dedication, the right attitude, proper planning, preparation and let's not forget the right diet and exercise plan. While losing 50lbs over the course of a year may initially seem extremely daunting, believe me, it's more than attainable. The key, when faced with any big task, is to break it down into smaller bite-sized pieces. Quite literally.
To lose 50lbs in 1 year you would have to lose a tad over 4lbs per month. That’s 1 pound per week and just 142 grams per day. Not so ambitious after all then!
