Over 40% of adult Americans are obese, a complicated condition that raises the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and several types of cancer. By creating low-grade chronic inflammation and the buildup of immune cells in insulin-sensitive tissues, obesity is one factor that can contribute to other health issues. Scientists believe that reversing, or “resolving, ” this chronic inflammation might delay the emergence of obesity-related diseases like diabetes and perhaps make it easier to lose weight.

Researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Joslin Diabetes Center discovered that in diet-induced obese mice, exposure to cold temperatures improved insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance while resolving obesity-induced inflammation. Their findings were reported in a new paper that was published in
Alpilean Weight Loss Supplement: How Inner Body Temperature Works
“We discovered that cold exposure reduced inflammation and improved metabolism in obesity, mediated at least in part by the activation of brown adipose tissue.” — Yu-Hua Tseng, Ph.D.
The research team also found that the mechanism was dependent on brown adipose tissue, which is commonly referred to as “good fat, ” releasing a naturally occurring molecule called Maresin 2 in response to cold stimulation. Brown adipose tissue is known as an active endocrine organ because it secretes molecules that communicate with other tissues and manage metabolism. It also aids in the release of stored energy and could promote weight reduction and metabolic health.
“Extensive evidence indicates that obesity and metabolic syndrome are linked with chronic inflammation that leads to systemic insulin resistance, so interrupting inflammation in obesity could offer promising therapies for obesity-related disease, ” said co-corresponding author Yu-Hua Tseng, Ph.D., a senior investigator in the Section on Integrative Physiology and Metabolism at Joslin Diabetes Center and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.
How To Lose Weight Fast: 10 Safe Tips To Help With Weight Loss
“We discovered that cold exposure reduced inflammation and improved metabolism in obesity, mediated at least in part by the activation of brown adipose tissue. These findings suggest a previously unrecognized function of brown adipose tissue in promoting the resolution of inflammation in obesity.”
In two earlier experiments, Tseng and colleagues found that brown fat may be activated by cold exposure to create certain lipid mediators that control nutrient metabolism. In the current study, the researchers identified a novel role for a lipid mediator produced from brown fat to resolve inflammation.
When the animals were exposed to a cold environment (around 40 degrees Fahrenheit), the researchers observed that the animals’ insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism improved and their body weight decreased, compared to control animals maintained at a thermoneutral zone – the environmental temperature where the body does not need to produce heat for maintaining its core body temperature.

“We found that brown fat produces Maresin 2, which resolves inflammation systemically and in the liver, ” said co-corresponding author Matthew Spite, Ph.D., a lead investigator at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Associate Professor of Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School. “These findings suggest a previously unrecognized function of brown adipose tissue in promoting the resolution of inflammation in obesity via the production of this important lipid mediator.”

Moreover, these findings also suggest that Maresin 2 could have clinical applications as a therapy for patients with obesity, metabolic disease, or other diseases linked to chronic inflammation; however, the molecule itself breaks down quickly in the body. Tseng and colleagues seek a more stable chemical analog for clinical use.
The team notes a shortcut to improved metabolic health may already exist. Multiple human studies conducted at Joslin and elsewhere show that exposure to mildly cold temperatures (50 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit) has been shown to be sufficient to activate brown adipose tissue and improve metabolism, though the mechanisms are not well understood.

The obese people had an average body temperature that was .63 degrees F cooler than normal weight people. The researchers calculated that this lower body temperature—which reflects a lower metabolic rate—would result in a body fat accumulation of approximately 160 grams per month, or four to five pounds a year, enough for the creeping weight gain many people experience.
Even though it was small, this study is impressive because it was so rigorously controlled. Participants had rectal temperature monitoring every two minutes, starting three hours after they woke up. They stayed in a constant, temperature-neutral environment, had fixed caloric intake and had minimal physical activity during the time they were in the study. That meant that any variables that might affect core body temperature were controlled.

The Skinny On Freezing Fat
The study excluded people with known endocrine/thyroid disorders, and it did not examine why obese people had lower body temperatures. However, I believe it is probable that the obese group did include people with undiagnosed Wilson’s Temperature Syndrome. These people may have trouble converting T4, the inactive form of thyroid hormone, to T3, the active form.
Research shows that T3 is directly responsible for maintaining body temperature. It does this, in part, by generating heat in the body’s brown fat, a unique form of fat whose only purpose is to generate heat. Most T4-to-T3 conversion occurs directly in the brown fat, so people who don’t convert T4 to T3 efficiently would have low body temperature, even if their blood levels of T4 and TSH are normal.
I think it is important for people who are overweight to check their body temperature. (For directions on how to do this correctly, see “How are body temperatures measured” on our website.) If your body temperature is consistently low—below 98.5 F., or 36.94 C, but typically lower than 97.8 F, or 36.56 C.— there’s a good chance that you have slow metabolism. It may mean that you are not converting enough T4 to T3.
Want To Lose Weight Fast? Keep Yourself Hydrated, Here's How!
Proper body temperature is important not just to feel warm. Body temperature affects every process in your body, including the ability to burn calories. In fact, the researchers in this study say as much: “This finding supports the growing scientific interest for body core temperature as a new therapeutic target for the treatment of obesity.”

I’ve found that normal body temperature can be restored in most people with a course of T3 therapy. This is the case even if they have normal blood levels of TSH or have been taking T4 (Synthroid.) As body temperature normalizes, people see improved mood and more energy. They also seem to have an easier time losing weight. It’s not a matter of just taking thyroid medicine. It’s a matter of normalizing the body temperature. I’ve had patients who have lost over 100 pounds once their temperatures were normalized, even when they were not able to lose previously. One patient of mine, once her temperature was normalized, lost over 30 pounds in one month without changing her diet or exercise. (Her other symptoms of low thyroid function resolved as well).
My mission is to teach as many doctors as possible about low temperature protocols,
