Having a hysterectomy will lower your body’s estrogen levels. One study found that this can be linked to weight gain in some women. In the study those who had a hysterectomy, with both ovaries removed, weighed on average 3 lbs more than those who hadn’t had the surgery. Heavier women and those who had weight fluctuations were found to be at a greater risk of weight gain.

Hysterectomy: What Your Doctor Won't Tell You
Centre your plate around veggies and lean proteins. Try to limit sugary snacks that aren’t going to fill you up and have very little nutritional value.
BUT, don’t starve yourself, make sure you’re getting enough calories so you’re not going to crave sugary foods – and a massive binge! Fill the fridge and cupboards with healthy snacks and a little of what you love. I’m talking mini versions of your chocolate bar so you’re not completely restricting yourself (Freddo’s and dark chocolate are great to have on stand by!)
Plan your meals too. Everything from breakfast to lunch, dinner and snacks should be planned out to avoid the temptation of takeaways and hunger induced dashes to the shop.

When I first had the surgery and for about one year after I actually lost weight. I have never been big, I am naturally quite petite, but I actually dropped quite a bit of weight.

Here I am about 7 months after my hysterectomy, I think I look very small and I did naturally lose weight after the surgery.
I had this much smaller frame for around about the next year but suddenly around 18 months after my surgery I started to notice my weight was fluctuating a lot more. Certain food could quickly cause me to be bloated and I found I needed to watch what I was eating more than I ever had done before.

It’s been 3 years since my surgery now and I do feel I am getting uncomfortable with the weight gain. I struggle a lot with feeling bloated which leads me to get a backache quite regularly. I have to make sure I am doing regular exercise and eating well, or I don’t feel right in myself.
I do know that in these two pictures below I am still small enough, but I am very uncomfortable with feeling this way.
I am trying my best to maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle but it is definitely a frustrating side effect of having a hysterectomy that I didn’t have to worry about before!

I was pregnant with my first son when I was diagnosed with uterine fibroids in 2001. I was serving in the Navy at the time, and I finally understood why I'd been struggling to keep my weight at a certain threshold. It wasn't my diet or my fitness — it was the fibroids.
For years after that, I had incredibly heavy, painful periods. Every month it was like cleaning up a crime scene. I used those big hospital pads, and I was still scared of the bleeding. I had to keep running back and forth to the bathroom to check on it.

But I didn't seek medical care because I thought it was normal, and I was focused on raising my two kids, having a family. We moms tend not to focus on the internal.
Then my husband passed away suddenly from a brain aneurysm at age 34. That year, the pain from the fibroids became unbearable, maybe from the stress and grief. I came to realize that I was the only parent my sons had left, and it was my responsibility to take care of my health. When my boys were 12 and 14 years old, I finally decided to pay attention to myself.
I didn't have health insurance at the time because my husband had been our family's provider. So, I waited until I got a new job working at the University of Memphis, and then I went to my gynecologist. I walked right into the room and told her, “I need a hysterectomy.

She was surprised, but when I lay down on the table and she touched my stomach, she said, Yeah, you're a great candidate.
She could tell just from an external exam how bad my fibroids were. I told her the pain was getting to be too much. There was a family connection — my mom and both of my sisters had fibroids as well. My twin sister had gotten a hysterectomy a few years back, and she’d urged me to get one. I kept ignoring her, telling her I’d be fine, but the fibroids were getting bigger and I knew it was time. After 17 years, I couldn’t be in pain anymore.
I scheduled the surgery for October 2018. Right afterward, I could feel the difference in my body. My gynecologist told me I had
