Lose Weight Dairy Gluten Free

Lose Weight Dairy Gluten Free

In recent years, eliminating certain foods, or entire food groups, from our diets has become a popular, if detrimental trend. I say detrimental as the reasoning behind doing so is often misguided at best, if not disingenuous. The truth of the matter, before we go any further, is that there is no need to remove any food or food group from our diets in the absence of allergy, or other underlying condition.

That is not to say you can’t choose to do so - but it’s important to be aware that your choice of doing so is not due to that food (or food group) being uniquely unhealthy or bad for you - because again, with the exception of trans fats, no food is uniquely unhealthy or bad for us. It is important that we differentiate between removing a food from our diet because it works for us, and removing it based on scientific evidence as to the harm or detriment it causes us.

Personal

Two types of food which have become popular targets to eliminate are gluten and dairy. Now again, if you are allergic to gluten (called coeliac disease), or lactose-intolerant, or both, then eliminating one or both of these would not only be sensible, it would be highly advisable (to what extent you need to eliminate them entirely will depend on the severity of the allergy). I would also say at this point that if you suspect yourself to be either of these things, go see your doctor: they will be able to make a proper diagnosis of these conditions.

If you are neither of these things, there simply isn’t a need to cut them out. Like I mention above, dairy and gluten are not uniquely bad for us, or unhealthy. In fact, both can be components of extremely healthy and nutritious diets, and are present in many different, highly nutritious foods. Despite what some parts of the media would have you believe, it is entirely possible to consume both gluten and dairy and be extremely healthy. In fact, dairy is an incredibly nutritious source of protein and fat, which a lot of people would benefit from including in their diets. And while we might not recommend someone eat unlimited amounts of bread, gluten-containing foods can be similarly beneficial when forming part of a healthy diet.

So why does cutting out gluten and/or dairy often lead to weight loss? Well the simple thing is, it usually creates a sizeable calorie deficit, whether intentional or not. For many people, gluten (aka bread) forms a large part of their carbohydrate intake - so when they cut out bread out entirely (which can be calorie-dense), they often inadvertently replace it with less calorie-dense foods (eg. potatoes), or simply don’t replace it at all! Logically, this then creates a sizeable ‘hole’ in their weekly calorie intake.

The same can be said for dairy. Often, people will replace dairy products with ‘alternatives’ - such as almond milk. Now, anyone who’s had almond milk will know it’s basically just almond water, so is unsurprisingly lower in calories than cow’s milk. And if you cut out all other dairy products such as cheese, butter etc, it is unlikely that you will replace them like-for-like with alternatives.

Celiac Disease Diet: What Is It, Foods Are Eat, Foods To Avoid, And More

Even when there is no explicit intention to do so, weight loss can often be a consequence of cutting out dairy and/or gluten for this reason - for many people it equates to cutting out large parts of their calorie intake, and unless they are carefully controlling their calories, it’s unlikely they will fully replace them.

This ‘gluten/dairy makes you gain weight’ theory becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy when people then add gluten or dairy back in (without making any other adjustments to their diet), and therefore significantly increase their calorie intake. And of course, with an increased calorie intake we often also get weight gain. Et voila, suddenly you are wondering if dairy or gluten ‘doesn’t agree with you’, or that you ‘struggle to digest it’ because you believe it is causing you to gain weight (or conversely, the ‘only way’ you can lose weight is by cutting it out).

If you do get digestive issues from consuming these foods, then of course it is a good idea to investigate it further (best done with the help of your doctor), and potentially reduce or eliminate these foods from your diet. However, in the absence of a medical issue, there simply is no scientific or evidence-based reason to do so. If you enjoy dairy and/or gluten, don’t feel bad for including them in your diet. Just like almost all foods, they can be a part of a nutritionally balanced, healthy diet.

The Effortless Gluten Free & Dairy Free Meal Prep Von Alexander Jones

If I told my grandma 25 years ago: “Grandma you need to do something about that arthritis and cut out dairy and gluten asap”. She’d look at me as if I’m crazy and then probably beat me with a stick forcing me to get out of her house. And she’d be right.

Every day she had bread and cheese, then something we called porridge which was made out of milk, bread, sugar and butter. And then we’d also have our traditional salad which was made out of cucumbers, tomatoes, onion, peppers and something similar to feta cheese that my grandma all grew and made herself. With a whole lot of bread that was fresh from the bakery.

My grandma’s cheese was made out of goat milk that my mom HATED with a ton of passion. The milk, the yogurt, the cheese tasted nothing like the products you can find today. They weren’t creamy and too pleasant. I remember the yogurt was super sour and had a very distinct smell that’s not for everyone.

The reality is that we’re basically trying to survive and eat clean in a very dirty, toxic world. And by toxic I don’t mean mentally toxic, I mean physically toxic. Toxic in a way that triggers chronic inflammatory diseases for many many people around the world. And we need to do something about it.
