“This isn’t about fitness fads or crash diets, ” explains Tom. “I want to see what we can achieve by simply following doctor’s orders and sticking to it for a couple of months. I’m hoping to prove that a pain-free lifestyle change will do the trick!”

Tom won’t be working alone. He’s recruited a gang of volunteers to join him who all want to lose weight and get fit. Tom can help everyone with the food side of the equation. He’s devised a whole load of lower calorie recipes which will help with weight loss, while fuelling active lifestyles. If the gang follow the NHS advice about the recommended daily calorie intake, then they can expect to lose a pound or two a week.

But Tom’s no exercise guru, so he’s drafted in his old mate Adam, a Personal Trainer, to advise the gang on what sort of exercise they should be taking, and how often to become ‘fit’. Adam will be using advice provided by the NHS as a framework, tailoring it for each of the team.

Lose Weight & Get Fit With Tom Kerridge: Weight Loss Gang & Tom Tackle First Weight In

Tom’s weight loss regime started after his 40th birthday when he changed his diet and took up swimming. Having reached a weight he felt comfortable with, he’s allowed himself to be more relaxed about what he eats, and he has also swapped from swimming to weight lifting. In the last couple of years his body has changed again as he’s developed more muscle, and he says he likes this body shape. But in the back of his mind, he wonders whether he’s doing the right thing. After all the hard work he’s put in, he doesn’t want to slip back into old habits. For the first time, he wants to measure his weight and fitness to get a true picture of where he’s at. Armed with this information, he’s up for the challenge of making improvements over a set period of time.

This is the reason Tom has volunteered to take part alongside the other participants. He will be the twelfth member of the gang, eating his recipes and pushing himself to try new forms of exercise to ensure he optimises his fitness.

Since opening The Hand & Flowers in 2005, Tom’s career path has progressed and grown with the support of his wife Beth and many members of key staff. In 2011, The Hand & Flowers was the first pub to receive two stars in the Michelin Guide. Near to the pub they also have The Shed, a private dining room by The Hand & Flowers team. The growth of the business continued with the opening The Coach in 2014 (which was awarded a Michelin star in 2017), The Butcher’s Tap in Marlow in 2017, and Kerridge’s Bar & Grill at Corinthia London in 2018. In November 2019 he will be opening his first restaurant in Manchester, The Bull & Bear.

At present Adam is a gym manager at a council-run leisure centre, and also a part time fire fighter for Cambridgeshire Fire Service. Previously he was a rehabilitation instructor for the NHS. Adam has also been a personal health trainer for the NHS, as well as being a freelance personal trainer.

Adam met Tom when they were students in Gloucester in the 1990s. They moved to London together and shared various flats. While Tom pursued his career as a chef, Adam tried his hand at acting before helping Tom to open the Hand & Flowers (he was the first barman). He then left to train to become a personal trainer and the pair remained close friends. Tom invited Adam to be part of the challenge because he has the right skills to work with people of all abilities and medical conditions.

Tom Kerridge Interview: How To Lose Weight — And Keep It Off

Bev feels she’s at a crossroads in her life; work is winding down and her children are growing up so she feels it’s now or never to tackle her weight and fitness.

Bev’s husband of 30 years is a keen walker and she has missed out on exciting trips (including one to Peru) because she didn’t think she would be fit enough to join him.

It won’t be long before she has grandchildren, and a big motivator is her desire to be a ‘hands-on granny’, not the one sitting in the corner minding the bags.

Bev has dabbled with diets and exercise routines since she was 17 years old. While she has a membership for a gym, she rarely breaks a sweat. She also takes her dog out regularly but only ever for a ‘slow walk’, and admits she likes to stay in her comfort zone. Although Bev can cook, the meals tend to be calorific and stodgy. She’s a classic comfort food eater. Addicted to sugar, her favourite snacks are cheesecake and other sweet treats, which is dangerous when you work from home!

Tom needs to help Bev break out of her comfort eating cycle and eat more nutritious and balanced meals. For exercise, he and the team’s personal trainer can support her to push herself more in strength and endurance so she’s fit and confident enough to join her husband on his walking trips. Her goal is to get to the top of Snowdon to prove to herself and her husband that she can.

Junk food lover Chris works as a community police officer on the same estates Tom grew up on, and describes the area as socially and economically deprived. He lives with his wife, 16-year-old daughter, six-year-old son, and their menagerie of pets. As a well-liked member of the community, Chris thinks he should be setting a better example to the locals when it comes to health and fitness.

At home Chris is a meat and two veg man. He loves plain, carb-heavy food with no frills and he is wary of trying new things. At work he grabs food on the go - sugary snacks in the station and chips and takeaways whist patrolling his patch. His poor diet is a running joke among his police colleagues and his only exercise is walking around the neighbourhood. Chris has been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis which prevents him doing certain types of rigorous exercise. It’s knocked his confidence and to some extent he’s using this as an excuse not to do more exercise. In the past Chris lost approximately seven stone with a dieting programme, but put the weight back on after his diagnosis.

Tom must encourage Chris to broaden his range of foods and embrace healthier ingredients while sticking to his calorie limit. For exercise, Chris needs to find aerobic and strength work that he can do with his medical condition.

Brothers-in-law and best mates Alex (left) and Dan (right) do everything together; work, play and holiday. They are constantly joking with each other but under this lies a genuine desire to lose weight and get fit. The lads and their families have a cruise booked, and they are desperate to get in shape.

The boys are regulars at fast food outlets for breakfast and lunch. Dan has recently given up smoking, but the weight has since piled on. He has been warned by his GP that he is at serious risk of health problems. Alex rewards himself with beer and knows he needs to cut back on the booze. While the job keeps them fairly strong and active, their underlying fitness is not good. Dan had an ulcer recently which gave him a reality check, he also has family members with diseases made worse by being overweight and he’s desperate to avoid the same fate and stay fit for his children. Alex plays rugby with a local mixed ability team but struggles to keep up.

Tom will need to sort out the lads’ daytime eating and the habit of rewarding themselves after a hard day’s work with drink, something Tom used to do. He can tap into their health and body
