Indoor Cycling Diet To Lose Weight

Indoor Cycling Diet To Lose Weight

Reason for Cycling: Spin classes are my favorite way to cycle and the best for a full-body workout. It is so easy to get lost in the music and push yourself—they really feel more like a dance party than a killer workout.

When I started college in 2010, I gained between 20 and 30 pounds. I joined a gym but only went a handful of times. Around the same time, I started to notice lower back pain whenever I tried to do any kind of rigorous exercise; doctors were never able to diagnose the cause or treat it.

Tips

In 2015, when I was 23, my best friend loved to work out and go to spin classes. When we got together, our plans often included a workout—a spin class or a group fitness class at Equinox. Spinning was difficult for me; I sat in the back row of the studio and did the best I could to keep up.

Finally, in May 2019, I joined Equinox and began my fitness journey. I found two trainers whose classes I enjoyed, so I started doing spin classes two to three times a week and group fitness classes twice a week. But by October, my pain spread from my lower back across my body. I stopped going to the gym, and I gained back a lot of the weight I had lost. But finally, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, and found a medication that made me completely pain-free.

When I was furloughed from my job due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I suddenly had the time to really focus on my health. After weighing 200 pounds for the last several years, I decided that I was going to give weight loss a real chance.

At the end of June 2020, I downloaded the Peloton app, pulled out my Sunny Fitness stationary bike that had been sitting in storage for several years, and dusted off some dumbbells that I had laying around. I loved the energy in all of the Peloton workouts that I streamed through the app, and I especially loved instructor Cody Rigsby’s classes. Before long, I was doing a spin class almost every day, and the weight started falling off. My workout routine is a 30-minute Peloton ride, with either a Peloton strength, barre, or pilates class. I also walk with my dog for at least half an hour every day.

Does Indoor Cycling Result In Weight Loss If Accompanied With A Healthy Diet And Exercise? What Areas Are Impacted?

In addition, I started to eat healthier. Before I started my Peloton journey, I did not have great portion control; I have a massive sweet tooth and a serious love of carbs, so now I try to cut down on sweets and carbs without eliminating them completely. I bought an Apple Watch to help motivate me to keep moving and track my workouts.

In November 2020, I upgraded from my inexpensive stationary bike to the Peloton bike. It was the best purchase I have ever made. Now, nine months after restarting my weight-loss journey, I have dropped 40 pounds, passing my weight-loss goal, and I am happier and healthier than I have been in a long time.

Now, I am looking forward to reaching my next goal of riding 50 miles in my first Pelofondo, a long-distance event for Peloton riders that focuses on mileage. Although my journey has certainly not been linear, I have seen what a healthy lifestyle can do for my body and mental health.

Practical Guide To Indoor Cycling

For other cyclists looking to start a weight-loss journey, remember that it is okay to get derailed. What matters is that you don’t give up, and you just keep moving. I started many times throughout my journey for different reasons, but when I see side-by-side photos of the 40 pounds I have lost, feel my clothes fit differently, and notice the confidence I have gained—that is the biggest motivator of all. I have reached a level of happiness in my own skin that I never even dreamed was possible.

Spinning is such a fun way to work out. When you’re in the saddle singing and dancing your way through a class, it is so much more than just a workout. I hear a lot of people who have seen spin classes say that it looks intimidating, but the only way you’ll find out if you love it is to just give it a try.

They're typically fast-paced and interval-based. You come out *dripping* in sweat and riding an endorphin high from the heart-pumping beats and ball-of-energy instructor on the mic. So you'd think that cycling is a perfect workout for weight loss, right?

The answer is both yes and no. Indoor biking classes (or cycling outdoors or on your own in the gym) can certainly be a part of your overall weight-loss plan, but they shouldn't be the

Air Bike Vs Spin Bike For Weight Loss

But there are some major pros when it comes to choosing cycling as your cardio method of choice for weight loss—if you peddle wisely. And alllll of the answers you've been dying to know about how to cycle for total weight-loss success are ahead.

Great news, Soul Cycle and Peloton lovers. Cycling is basically just as effective as running when it comes to its cardio benefits, says Charlie Seltzer, MD, an obesity medicine physician and ACSM-certified exercise specialist. Regular cycling may help lower your blood pressure, insulin levels, and your resting heart rate if you do it frequently enough (as can running), Dr. Seltzer explains.

Where cycling gives you a leg up on other forms of cardio? It’s an *awesome* lower-body workout. Your hamstrings, calves, and glutes will all feel the burn during a cycling class, especially during portions where you have the resistance turned up. Your leg muscles are some of the biggest in your body; so the more lower-body muscle mass (and muscle in general) you have means the more calories you'll burn during your workouts and at rest, Dr. Seltzer says.

Peloton Cycling For Weight Loss: Bike Should Be Part Of Fuller Exercise Routine

So if you push yourself during those sprints and hill climbs and turn that knob to the right, you may develop stronger legs by cycling than by running, Dr. Seltzer notes. Let's be honest, though, it can be easy to coast through cycling classes when you're just not in the mood to crank up the resistance. But if you don't touch the resistance knob and push yourself, you probably won't achieve the lower-body strength benefits.

Bonus alert: Cycling is much easier on your joints than running. “Cycling is a great way to get your cardio if you’re looking for a low-impact workout, ” says Tatiana Lampa, an ACSM-certified personal trainer and corrective exercise specialist. “If you have low back pain but are still looking to lose weight, cycling will be your best bet...and in comparison to other forms of cardio, it has a low risk of injury.”

If you’re hoping to lose belly fat specifically, don’t get your hopes up. You can't spot reduce fat, the American Council on Exercise confirms—no matter what kind of physical activity you’re doing, cycling included.

How Fast Will You Lose Weight With An Exercise Bike Workout?

It’s not all bad news, though. Cycling burns calories, and that calorie deficit can help lead to weight loss if you are supplementing your physical activity with a nutritious diet. With consistency, you'll lose weight gradually all over, just not in one specific body part at a time (but you know this).

Cycling also kicks your metabolism into high gear, which is helpful for weight loss. “Some people will adapt to cycling in a way that makes them continue burning calories throughout the day, ” says Dr. Seltzer, “but you have to make sure you don’t use your morning cycling class as an excuse to do less during the rest of your day instead of staying active.”

The takeaway: Don't take cycling classes with the expectation of shrinking your waistline. Use them as one component in your healthy lifestyle to help create a calorie deficit, boost your cardiovascular ability, and motivate you to practice other healthy habits outside of class, too.

Here's What You Should Know Before Your Next Spin Class

The number of calories you’ll burn is pretty individualized to you, the class you take, and the effort you put in. “Cycling burns between 400 and 1, 000 calories an hour, depending on the intensity of the ride and how much the rider weighs, ” says Lampa.

Both Lampa and Dr. Seltzer agree that an ideal workout routine for indoor cycling class aficionados would include three or four classes per week. So, in theory, you could

Burn anywhere from 1, 200 to 4, 000 calories per week by taking cycling classes. That means you *could* burn anywhere from half a pound to a pound per
